A PATHWAY TO NATURE
THE PLACE - Anchored by a stunning mature chestnut tree, this St Albans garden held great potential despite its uneven lawn and overgrown borders. The existing landscape felt unstructured, with the undulating ground and tired planting masking the true character of the site. It was a space waiting to be defined, needing a clear vision to balance the dominance of the tree with usable living space.

THE BRIEF
The aim was to transform the single open space into a journey through distinct zones. The clients requested a stylish entertaining area and level lawn close to the house, which would then transition into a naturalistic sanctuary for wildlife. They wanted to separate the social areas from the quieter retreats, requiring a secluded garden room and fire pit to be positioned at the rear.

THE DESIGN
To create the primary social zone, we installed a spacious deck using rich balau hardwood. This material choice anchors the design, providing a warm, durable platform that acts as a seamless extension of the home. It levels the ground immediately adjacent to the house, resolving the issue of the uneven lawn and establishing a generous stage for summer parties and family meals.
Framing this deck is a striking bespoke steel pergola, designed to add architectural height and define the zone without blocking the light. We softened the industrial lines of the steel with integrated privacy screens and plush outdoor styling. This combination creates a cosy, enclosed atmosphere - an 'outdoor living room' that offers shelter and intimacy while remaining open to the garden views.

Moving away from the house, the hard landscaping gives way to a softer, wilder feel. We introduced a wildflower meadow to inject texture and movement, fulfilling the client’s wish for a wildlife-friendly space. A clean, linear path cuts through the flowers, guiding the eye - and the visitor - past the outdoor room and towards the secluded fire pit beneath the chestnut tree.
